It’s a shame and a waste to love horses and NOT to learn to ride horseback. Use books to learn everything you can about how horses behave, how to dress for your riding lessons, and what you’ll be taught when you’re on the horse. Then find a reputable instructor with a string of quiet, well trained horses or ponies. Now get on that horse!
