Was he the world’s greatest horse trainer of all time? Would his picture be in the horse trainer’s Hall Of Fame? Perhaps.

His name was Jesse Beery. Before he was twenty he became a world class horse trainer. He was so well known, there were more people who heard of him than didn’t.

Jesse Beery learned how to train horses almost entirely on his own because there were few people who knew how to train a horse.

Beery’s parents discouraged horse training as a career but later okay’d his passion. From then on there was no stopping Beery from achieving greatness.

Beery’s first inclination to train horses happened when he drove a horse and buggy to a friend’s house. As Beery exited the buggy the horse spooked and ran home. During that long walk home Beery was determined to make his horse stay put.

As he worked with his horse he discovered ways to get a horse to do what he wanted. Although nearly killed in training incidents and laughed at from friends and neighbors, Beery soon became THE authority on horse training.

Beery’s methods solved numerous problems with horses that seemed unsolvable. If a horse was hard to shoe, ran away, pulled while tied, spooky, and more…Beery knew how to fix it.

As if his accomplishments weren’t enough to keep him busy, Beery wrote a Horse Training manual describing how to do what he did. Unfortunately, few copies exist today and those that do may be hard to read due to the poor condition of these very old books.

Beery’s book may be available in used book stores if one is motivated to search. Be prepared for a time consuming search – but if a Beery book is found in good condition, be ready to pay a handsome price.

There may be an alternative. Beery’s book was recently revived by horse trainer Andy Curry. Curry discovered Beery’s book in a used book store by accident.

Curry says, “This is one of the most amazing books I’ve EVER read about horse training. Beery explains his methods so clearly it’s like he’s there with you…holding your hand…showing what to do. Every responsible horse owner should have a copy of this book – period!”

It is important that you realize just how vital a horse’s shoes are to their lives. In today’s day and age, there is a lot of stuff that can make a horse sick or injured, and a lot of it is going to be found where they are walking. No matter what surface they are walking on, there is going to be germs and other things that can get into their feet and cause them sickness. Also, no matter what your horse is doing for you, they are going to be working hard, and this might cause an un shoed horse to have a cracked hoof or another foot injury.

A horse’s shoe is something that is, of course, put onto their feet. The process doesn’t hurt the horse, because the shoes are attached to the hooves of the horses, and in this manner it doesn’t cause the horse any pain because the horse’s hooves don’t have feeling. They are kind of like our fingernails. The shoes are attached to the hooves, and then they act as the bottoms of the feet.

You should know that if your horse gets a foot injury or an illness in their foot, your likelihood of saving them is not good. Foot injuries are very bad for horses, and if they are too badly injured they are going to have to be put down. Because of this, it is very important that you take all of the precautions necessary to make sure that your horse has the proper shoes and that they are well taken care of.

If you are interested in learning more about your horse’s shoes, you need to be sure that you contact someone who can help you out. You should not think that you can take care of on your own unless you’re well-trained, because a horse’s shoe is the best defense that he has against dying young.

Because of how important shoes are to a horse’s health, it is never something you should attempt on your own. Be sure that you find a vet and someone who can help you with your horse’s shoes, and be sure that you know as much as you can about horse’s health before you get a horse.

Remember to have your horse’s feet cared for often, and you will find that you horse will live a longer and happier life in general.

equine.jpg Equine influenza is a major virus disease that causes flu like symptoms in horses and is from the group of viruses that causes flu in humans. This is a major viral disease present throughout Europe, North America and parts of Asia.

What is the incubation time?
Most horses exposed to the virus will show signs within a period of 1-5 days.

What are the signs of influenza?
Equine influenza appears similar to a range of other viral respiratory diseases. Viruses that are responsible for coughs and colds in Australia include Equine Herpesvirus, Equine Rhinovirus and Equine Adenovirus. Most of these viruses produce rather mild signs which include a discharge from the nose and coughing. Equine Influenza produces more severe symptoms with horses developing a fever and a dry hacking cough. Horses become ill and are reluctant to eat or drink for several days but usually recover in 2 to 3 weeks.

How is influenza virus spread?
The virus can be spread easily from horse to horse as a result of droplets and also from nasal discharge and from things like infected brushes and rugs. The disease is very contagious and there is almost 100% infection rate in a population that has been previously unexposed to the virus.

Can it be prevented and treated?
Because it is a virus, there are no drugs that influence the outcome of the disease. However many horses develop secondary infections with bacteria which can lead to pneumonia and other problems. Good nursing care and if necessary, antibiotics to deal with bacterial illness associated with the disease are important parts of treatment. The most important part of dealing with this illness is effective vaccination. Reasonably effective vaccines are now available featuring the two most important types of this virus but horses need to be vaccinated 2-3 times per year to ensure their immune status.

The most likely way that this disease could be introduced into Australia is through an imported horse and horse owners should be aware of this potential if there are any horses introduced onto farms or into stables. The most likely signs will be the rapid spread of a severe respiratory flu like disease which is more severe than the usual virus problems.
